The National Film Board of Canada was generous enough to bestow upon us a small grant towards The Hollow Tree doc. This will go a long way to getting broadcasters and distributors interested in putting up the funds to complete the film. It also means I can stay alive long enough to at least finish production. (Beyond that is a mystery to me.)

The Hollow Tree is proudly erect. All it needs now is to be anchored to the ground. But the Hollow Tree conservation society is still short of its financial goal. To make a donation via paypal, please visit:

Well this film is officially rolling now. I purchased an HD camera kit last week with a generous donation from the Stanley Park Hollow Tree Conservation Society. Last night was my second night of filming. It was also a pivotal meeting of the Vancouver Parks Board. First on the agenda was the issue of what will become of the Hollow Tree. Seven souls came forward and spoke on behalf of the tree (3 of them members of the Hollow Tree Society), and put forth their proposal for why and how they feel the tree ought to be saved. A wonderful woman named Eleanor Hadley (age 87) spoke at the meeting and tore the board of commissioners to pieces for "shirking their duties" and neglecting the tree all these years. (Fore-shame, commissioners.) However, in the end, the board voted unanimously to extend the life of the tree a further 5 weeks. In this time, the Hollow Tree Society will need to obtain certified structural designs for how they plan to straighten and support the tree as well as complete their fundraising for the project. After that they will return to the Parks Board and present their final plan for consideration.

To whomsoever may be reading these shenanigans, thank you for taking an interest in Vancouver’s Hollow Tree and the documentary about said Hollow Tree. I am going to be following the tree around like the paparazzi in the coming months. I will not stop until it is proudly erect or splayed in pieces on the ground.

I am also collecting true stories about people’s most magical, bizarre experiences with the tree. If you have a particularly amazing story that you would like to share (potentially on camera) then we should talk. I will be looking to interview people in the coming months so please get in touch if you are a storyteller with a Hollow Tree story to tell.
